Lots of catching up to do

As you can see, I've been neglecting updating this site. I have been watching movies left, right and centre all this time and have kept a catalogue of the ones that I've watched. But since it would take too much time for me to write even a brief review or summary of these movies, I will just put a rating out of 10 next to the title of the movie. I hope that's alright with you. Who knows, maybe I will start to write brief reviews again in the future.

Story of Quiji

From acclaimed director, Zhang Zhimou and starring a young Gong Li. This movie takes place in China. I found this simple story about a wife who wants to find justice for her husband to be enjoyable. I liked how it showed life at a small rural village and then compared it to a big city in China as Quiji tries to move her court case to a higher level.Again, the director doesn't use fancy camera work and no special effects. It is sort of in the vein of watching a documentary and it looked low budget but it worked in telling her story to the audience. 6/10

The Departed

The Oscar Award winning "best movie" just doesn't measure up to the original Hong Kong "Infernal Affairs". It stars Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg and Jack Nicholson. Instead of infiltrating a triad as in the original movie, it is with the Mafia instead. Even though I watched the original, I thought the changes to the plot in this movie made it very confusing. Even though it was a remake, it didn't have the feel of the original. Not much excitement or suspense in this one. This one is worse than the original and I didn't even like the original that much. My advice to you...you guessed it. Watch the original. 6/10

The Touch

Michelle Yeoh is in search of an artifact that can not fall into the wrong hands for the world will be in dire straits. Plot sounds familiar? Yeah, it's not very original. The action in it is the only redeeming part of the movie. Michelle Yeoh can do some moves but reliance on wires and special effects degrade the action scenes. Therefore, if you're wanting to watch a brainless movie with some comedy and some sub-par action, then this one will do. After all, it is kind of entertainment. 6/10

SPL

I read good reviews about this movie saying how great it was and so I was sold on buying the DVD. SPL stars Simon Yam, Donnie Yen, and Sammo Hung. It's about a group of cops led by Simon Yam who is about to retire and his soon-to-be replacement, Donnie Yen who try to defeat Triad Boss, Sammo Hung. Let me just tell you that this movie contains the most impressive martial arts combat that I've seen in a while. Seeing Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung duke it out was a blast. Not only is the martial arts incredible with displays that are original but it also contains a good plot. Because the characters are well formed, we route for them and we get to see how they tick. There is a touching moment in the film too. What more can we ask for? A sequel? Unfortunately, there can't be one and there won't be one. 10/10

The Host

This movie was critically acclaimed and generated a lot of box office success in Korea. It's a Korean movie about a monster that grows when a laboratory starts dropping old formaldehyde solutions into a drainage system that flows into a river. This monster kidnaps a father's daughter and the pursuit from the family to find her ensues. The special effects in the movie is pretty good with great CGI. The monster, when I saw it for the first time looked pretty spectacular. But some of the stunts were too unbelievable. It does have slow moments when the background of the characters are fleshed out for the audience. I didn't find the main character interesting enough to cheer for either. Also, there is not enough action sequences that we haven't seen before in other movies. Other than that, it's still a good film. 7/10

Lost In Time

Cecilia Cheung and Louis Koo star in this melodrama about a woman who loses her husband and ends up adopting his child. The woman doesn't have enough money to make ends meet so she decides to take over his former job as a bus driver in Hong Kong. We learn the ins and outs of what driving a bus entails in Hong Kong. We also see the frustrations, trials, and tribulations that Cecilia has to endure. The movie begins in a sad note and there are sad moments interspersed throughout the movie. There is a moment that doesn't make much sense but when the end credits roll, everything is cleared up for the viewers. If you're looking to shed some tears and to watch a good movie as well, then this will be your ticket to ride. 9/10

Batman Begins

The origins of Batman portrayed by Christian Bale lets us forget about the last efforts from the past decade when the franchise just went downhill. I actually never liked the previous movies but the trailers for this one made me want to watch it. It did take me a while to get a copy of the DVD, which I regret since it probably would've been much better watching on the bigscreen. If you've got a bigscreen tv set, then there shouldn't be that much of a difference but I digress. The movie takes us into a grittier journey into the life of Bruce Wayne which is a great improvement over the other movies. The action in this movie was just spectacular especially with the scenes involving the batmobile which is like nothing that I've ever seen before in terms of a batmobile or any automobile out there. I was just mesmerized by the speed, power, and technology of the new batmobile. The plot had a little to be desired but the action scene involving the batmobile makes this movie worth watching alone. I can't wait for a sequel. 8/10

Pan's Labyrinth

Spanish movie with english subtitles which was given critical acclaim by critics about a girl who is actually a reincarnation of a princess but she doesn't know it until an encounter with a fairy. Taking us into sort of an "Alice In Wonderland" feel to the movie where there are mythical creatures and downright scary ones such as the creature that eats children with eyes on their hands. You have to see it to know what i'm trying to describe to you. It's not a typical fairy tale movie for kids, that's for sure although it does have a storytime theme to it. There are a couple of very gross scenes that left me and the audience squirming in our seats. The ending was a letdown though. 8/10

Children of Men

Based upon a top selling novel about the future where women stopped bearing children until a discovery of a refugee being pregnant. The government tries to stop this woman from being discovered since she is a refugee but there are others that want to keep her safe. I thought it was pretty much a better than average movie but there was a few scenes where the war scene was pretty gritty and spectacular, to say the least. It was as if I was watching CNN with live coverage of a war in progress. Now that's a compliment. Great special effects. There was a few humourous scenes involving Michael Caine as a hippy but the overall feel of the movie was of frustration, doom, and despair. 8/10

Fearless

The movie hyped up to be the last Jet Li wushu martial arts film in the ilks of "Once Upon a Time in China" and "Fong Sai Yuk" makes this movie worth watching for that reason alone. Aside from that, it's nothing special. We've seen most of the moves that has been done before. The best part isn't the final battle since it disappoints. This movie is based upon real life characters so that might explain how abrupt and disappointing the final scene is. Standard Jet Li movie but I was hoping that it would deliver just a little bit more. Great cinematography and soundtrack but a little bit more special effects than needed even though there isn't that much in abundance compared to say, "Twins Effect" for example. It's a better than average movie, overall. 8/10.

Great Expectations

I usually review more current movies but this movie was released in 1998. I didn't have the chance to watch this one until now after looking through my sister's DVD collection. Anyways, it stars a young Ethan Hawk, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Robert DeNiro. It is based on an adaptation of a Charles Dickens novel. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the cinematography and score of the movie was. The story was well done as well as the acting as well. A young boy from a poor family is invited to keep a wealthy eclectic recluse's niece company. The boy falls in love with the niece but she doesn't seem to show any emotions to the boy. She comes and goes in his life but is there a destiny for the two of them? Were they meant to be? I won't say so you'll have to see for yourself. I've noticed that i've enjoyed watching quite a bit of Ethan Hawk movies. He surely has picked great roles in his career. You should pick this movie out as well. 8/10
